The companion piece to Conopoly 1.
Something I put together for Volt 9000’s latest album, Conopoly. You can get it here when it comes out (should be around June 4th). I’ve done work twice before for the group, and each time Cory Gorski’s given me an extremely wide creative berth, and has handled my snail-like art production pace very kindly. Good bunch of guys.

Also, the album’s fantastic. I still haven’t heard the last two tracks, but the first 4/5ths are top-notch. Had “Game of Drones” stuck in my head for about a week.

D33: Figure/materials study.
For those of you that haven’t heard, it’s illegal again in the United States to independently unlock new cellular phones from their providers. That’s the state of software copyright laws nowadays — stick some code in a device, tell the user that their use of the device constitutes consent to your licensing terms, and you can dictate what they’re allowed to do and not allowed to do with the device from then on. Brilliant!

Green Lantern vs. Wildfire.
This is for Jim Shelley’s blog, Flashback Universe. Last year he used an old Adam Strange drawing of mine to mock-up a cover for a Strange Adventures 100-Page Super Spectacular. This month he commissioned a new piece to do the same treatment on, and this is how it turned out. A good bit of fun. I always like having legitimate reasons (aside from personal taste) to restrict my colour choices to the classic 48-colour American comics palette.

Ted Nelson in 4 bits.
This drawing is for my wife, whose extraction traces into the mist-veiled marshes of Pictland, and who thought it would be a hoot to have a picture of herself cast as a sort-of mythic warrior princess. For an example, she showed me a hand-coloured engraving by Theodor de Bry which was published in 1590 in an illustrated edition of A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia, by Thomas Heriot. I thought the engraving was marvelous, and wanted straight away to do an homage to it. De Bry’s engravings were based on a number of watercolours by John White, whose vision of the ancient Picts is about 5% history, and 95% imagination — but what a fun fabrication he came up with! While my version of his “true picture” is still complete fantasy, I did do away with White’s griffon-heads and star-pasties and instead tattooed my model with a mixture of genuine Pictish symbols, iron-age Celtic ornament, and some Scythian bits and bobs.

De Bry’s engraving can be seen here: http://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/debry/id/45

A few years ago I was doing a lot of ActionScript programming and considering going into the online game business. I had no illusions about making a career of it, it was just something I thought I might like to do as a hobby. I never took it any further than programming a derivative of Asteroids (the ne plus ultra of early video games, IMO). I did, however, come up with a company name and logo when, for one reason or another, I was looking at pictures of uakari monkeys one day and thought, hey, uakari rhymes with Atari, and George Opperman’s “Fuji” logo goes right on that platyrrhine nose! Delighted as I was with the concept, I shelved it after drafting the logo, knowing that I could never use it as an actual commercial logo — it’s bad enough embedding someone else’s logo inside your own, but when that someone else happens to be one of the most litigious companies in the gaming industry, you’re going nowhere fast. I forgot about all this until yesterday when I saw my logo draft on my hard disk and felt compelled to completely redraw it. This is the re-draw; since I’d given-up on the idea of it being a logo graphic, I let myself do something much more illustrative this time around.

Okay, sorry… but...
Something that I experiment with every once in a while is a fairly open ink drawing toned with graphite, like this. I was looking at some Shinkiro drawings today (let Tumblr be your guide), and he uses a similar technique on a lot of his work: clean black contour line with some beautifully contained tonal stuff. I’ve loved his work for years; the sobriety, discipline, conscientiousness and solidity… really, really great. Anyhow, looking at him made me want to open a leaf in the ol’ sketchbook and experiment a little.

Will Keith: Weapons Master.
I would call him no less than a real-life action hero for the 21st century, this Will Keith of New Jersey. Indeed, through his YouTube channel I have stolen a glimpse into the occult goings-on of the backyard samurai set, and seen in its face, in its very eyes, the innate martial energies of man and the destruction those energies wreak upon the refuse of our great societal organism — in particular it’s beverage vessels. In the immortal words of the wise GooSmurf, bottles beware.

Long live Will Keith; may his blade not chip, nor shatter.
