Astrons is a retro-styled 3D arcade shooter that I created back in 2019. It is a loving homage to Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Atari Star Wars and other vector shooters from the early 1980s.
The game was never really finished, but this year (2025) I made some modifications to it, and I am in the process of adding a couple of new enemies to make the gameplay a little more interesting. This renewed interest in the game got me imagining what an Astrons arcade cabinet might look like. So I decided to start designing one.
I am a huge fan of the cabinet/licensing artwork for Atari's Space Duel. It's absolutely beautiful. I'm also quite fond of Asteroids Deluxe (both the game's side-art as well as the game itself), and I wanted to produce something in that highly graphic, limited-palette style.
I began by designing some clip art that I could use to assemble a variety of images for the hypothetical arcade cabinet, as well as Web graphics, and whatever other uses may come up.
I then assembled these assets into the marquee composition you see up at the top of this page, as well as the following side-art.

I designed the side-art to accommodate an Asteroids Deluxe-style cabinet, because I've always liked the deep cowling on that particular machine. Here's a mock-up of the decorated cabinet.

Some design work remains for this hypothetical arcade machine: the control panel, and whatever bezel artwork surrounds the monitor. As that work is completed, this page will be updated.
And if a real-world Astrons coin-op machine is ever made...
