MOTU '85

This was a fan comic, written by James Eatock (who also did the layouts). James and I go way back – he was one of my first regular clients when he was publishing a magazine called cereal:geek. We didn't finish this comic ...rather, I didn't finish this comic, for a variety of reasons.

So why didn't this get finished? Some of my work on this just looks incredibly amateurish. Check out page 3 – great layout by James, terrible execution by me. As a spare-time thing, with some pages being rushed and some pages not (we tried to put out one page per week; some weeks were busier than others) the quality of work is, on the whole, pretty inconsistent. Also, I initially tried to do this entirely traditionally – good ol' pen and paper – but ended-up changing gears at page 9 because I was so slow with traditional work (and the quality wasn't that good!). It's very disheartening to continue working on projects like this when you're not happy with the work – and there's no monetary reward! Fan comics have to be a labour of love, 'cause you can't monetize 'em, y'know?

The last page (13) was done almost two years after the first dozen – after I tried to generate interest (and investment) in finishing the comic.

James and I also worked on a She-Ra fan story, called The Secret's Out. That one actually got finished – and turned-out pretty good!

This page should be indexed at the home page, and at the comics index.
